Ballet Papier was born in 1992, when artist and painter Maria Berenice La Placa began drawing ballerinas for her daughter, Ámbar Gavilano, who was studying ballet. The illustrations quickly caught the attention of Ámbar’s friends, who also wanted to decorate their rooms with these graceful dancers. As word spread, people began placing orders, and the drawings became increasingly popular—marking the beginning of the Ballet Papier journey.

Today, all Ballet Papier products are designed in Barcelona, Spain, where the two creators currently reside. From there, their designs travel the world, as each item is shipped globally from our various production points across the United States and Europe.

Berenice and Ámbar combine their talents and creativity to design every Ballet Papier product—crafted especially for dance lovers and art enthusiasts.

Each design starts with a sketch by artist Berenice, meticulously outlined by hand. Ámbar, a former professional ballet dancer, teacher, and choreographer, reviews every pose, expression, and detail to ensure anatomical accuracy, style, and authenticity true to the character depicted. Her expertise brings depth, emotion, and realism to every illustration.
